Chrysanthemum Maximum (Shasta Daisy)

The Shasta Daisy is a classic flowering daisy with large white blooms and yellow centers. It is a popular wildflower due to its prolific flowering and its ability to grow in all regions of North America. It may take this deer resistant flower a year to get solidly established but you and the butterflies will likely enjoy a few flowers during year one!

This 24-30” daisy is a member of the Chrysanthemum family and makes an excellent cutting flower. (To prolong the bloom, pick off flowers as soon as they fade.)

Shasta Daisies like to grow in full sun and well-drained soils. But they will do well in partial shade as well. They grow in zones 3-9 and prefer average to moist well-draining soils and are considered drought tolerant after getting established.

This iconic classic will form a thick sea of daisies. To keep your garden pristine and to win over the neighbors, plan to divide the plants and possibly give away as gifts every 3-4 years.

Fun facts:

  • The Shasta Daisy is named after Mount Shasta in N. California because its snowy white flowers match the snow that sits year-round on the summit of Shasta.
  • This flower is the symbol commonly used by the PEO Sisterhood, one of the largest women’s philanthropic organizations in the county, and the women’s college they operate, Cottey College.
