Mulching helps prevent and reduce weeds, and when weeds do sprout they are generally easier to pull out. Adding mulch around your plants and trees helps with reducing evaporation and helps to keep soil cooler during the summer months thus reducing the need for as much water. Mulching also improves the quality of the soil over time as it breaks down and adds nutrients to the soil.
Types of mulch to use:
There are many different mulching options both color, size, and textures.
Bark and wood chips are the most common types of mulch and can be purchased in a variety of material size and colors.
Cedar wood mulch tends to last longer than pine mulch as it is much more resistant to bugs and moisture breaking it down over time. Pine needles, grass clipping, straw, and leaves can also be used as mulch, however tend to need to be replaced more often and more prone to blowing away depending on the area they are placed in.
No matter the type of mulch you choose to use, be sure to mix it in with the top soil after the mulch breaks down and starts to decompose and before adding a new layer of mulch.
