FORESTERIA NEOMEXICANA (New Mexico Privet, Desert Olive)

(2 customer reviews)

A fantastic deciduous native plant is often seen in washes and arroyos from New Mexico to Southern Colorado and Utah. Grows fast to 6ft.-12ft., usually less. Can be shaped into a single or multi-stemmed small tree or used as a large shrub, even a hedge, as it responds well to pruning. Bright green olive-like leaves turn bright yellow after the first frost. Light-colored branches add contrast during the winter months. Yellow flowers are followed by dark blue berries in clusters. Very drought tolerant, cold hardy and deer resistant.

Colorado Hardy Plants are just that… hardy! We have sought out plant varieties that provide low maintenance, use little or no water once established, and are simply hardy enough to grow where others don’t.

We grow and ship our plants in 5″ or quart-size (in certain varieties) plastic containers. Knowing that the root system is the most important part of the plant we guarantee. our plants to have a large root system that fills the container.

CHP is a small family operation! We propagate, pot, water, prune, and personally package the pants you order from us. Most of our plants are grown from cuttings taken from the plants or seeds collected nearby the nursery at an elevation of 6300 ft. Our weather is extreme with temps below 0 are common in the winter and intense sunlight all summer long. We don’t grow plants in heated greenhouses, they have to be able to survive the elements!

  1. Andrew (verified owner)

These plants are rugged, give them the most sun you can, don’t drowned them in water and they will grow like crazy! I’ve bought plenty of them from here and they are all doing amazing, some struggled but I cut back my watering and they are doing much better. Definitely want more, they make a great windbreak in a very windy and dry environment, they don’t need much care and look great. Love the way they look growing naturally.

These plants do very well on drip irrigation. I planted them as a privacy screen and they are growing at a rate that I am very pleased with. The birds are enjoying the habitat that these plants provide.
