Prunus Tomentosa (Nanking Cherry, Mtn Cherry)

Are you looking for a bush/hedge that has pretty flowers and is low Maintenance? The Nanking Cherry is both of those things.

Although classified as a shrub, it can grow to 12’ tall and 12’ wide which is a small tree in our book. With its bushy structure, it makes a great hedge row for windbreaks, privacy, and natural fences. However, this “fence” will change colors across the seasons.

Also known as the Manchu or Mountain Cherry, these beauties Bloom in early spring, with pinkish buds opening up into pale pink or white flowers that are very fragrant. Then they produce tart and tangy scarlet-colored cherries that can be eaten fresh or used in pies, jams, and jellies.

Don’t worry, if you’re not a jam maker, the birds and other species of wildlife will munch on the berries as they use the large shrub as a sanctuary.

As mentioned earlier, these plants are pretty tolerant. They are not particular to soil type and are drought tolerant once established. (They do prefer well-drained soil)

One thing to consider before purchasing a Nanking is that they aren’t self-fertile. For them, it takes at least two to tango!

For this reason and due to the fact that they make a great hedge, we recommend buying multiples and planting them 4-6ft apart. At a minimum, you will need two or more planted within 100′ of each other to ensure cross-pollination.

Fun Fact: The word tomentosa indicates the hairy nature of the underside of the leaf.

Colorado Hardy Plants are just that… hardy! We have sought out plant varieties that provide low maintenance, use little or no water once established, and are simply hardy enough to grow where others don’t.

We grow and ship our plants in 5″ or quart-size (in certain varieties) plastic containers. Knowing that the root system is the most important part of the plant we guarantee. our plants to have a large root system that fills the container.
